| BEFORE Preparation of the Gifts (Offertory) St Andrew Daily Missal 1945 | AFTER Preparation of the Gifts (Offertory) Magnificat/UCCB |
| (Priest praying) Receive, O holy Father, almighty and eternal God, this spotless host which I, Thy unworthy servant, offer unto Thee, my living and true God, for mine own countless sins, offenses and negligences, and for all here present; as also for all the faithful Christians living and dead, that it may avail both for my own and their salvation unto life eternal. | (Priest praying) Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness, we have received the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. (Congregation’s response) Blessed be God for ever. |
Why is this change important?
The meaning of the prayers during the Preparation of Gifts/Offertory of the Mass have completely changed. The original version at the beginning, vs. the most recent version, have the following notable changes:
- acknowledging we are unworthy servants, vs giving credit to the earth and our human hands, for offering up the host
- offering is made for our sins, offenses and negligences in hopes that it will help with our salvation
Additional Notes
The above changes to the initial prayers during the Offertory/Preparation of the Gifts are just the beginning of the Offertory prayers, which changed so dramatically, the entire meaning of these prayers has been lost.

The whole meaning of the offering makes it seem like the congregation has some part in its origin. A whole generation does know the true significance of the “Offer “tory . The priest as an acknowledged sinner is thanking God for allowing him and all sinners to have a chance at salvation by the consecration of this host into the Body Blood Soul and divinity of His Son.
