Innocuous
Egregious
| BEFORE Scripture Mark 8:36-37 Douay-Rheims Version | AFTER Scripture Mark 8:36-37 New American Version Revised Edition |
| For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? | What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? What could one give in exchange for his life? |
Why is this change important?
Why does the word “soul” cause the modernist translators such an allergic reaction? This is another example of changing language to create a disconnect between modern readers and our ancestors. This has occurred hundreds of times in both the new and the old testaments. “Soul” is changed to “life” or “self” or “being”. There is no good reason to change it because the underlying meaning has not changed and no “enlightened” intellectual bible scholar is more intelligent than many past generations of witnesses.
